Last friday the 24th of Febuary i went to Borås and was DJing at Grand Hotel. The biggest nightclub in Borås. It was packed! I guess 1500 people or more. As always very proffesional personal and staff. I like that nightclub. Nice guests and very good sound on the dancefloor and really cool lightning. Thank you Grand!!! Hope to see you soon. Now days DJs take their laptop and go off to the club to a gig. When you use a laptop you dont need to think that much of what kind of audience you will meet. You have thousend and thousends of good tunes i your computer. You are ready for any typ of a crowd. But when you using vinyl you have to do some research before you leave for a gig. I have a base of 5 cases of vinyl witch with i can do almost any type of dj-set for almost any type of crowd. But then i pick a 20-30 records that might suit just that club i am DJing at.

So i spend a lot of time with my records getting ideas for a dj-set. A lot of people think that the DJ make easy money just showing up at the nightclub plays for a few hours and then go home. This is not the true picture. In the modern age where music is so avalible a DJ has to pick out just thoose tracks that really sticks out. To day people follow a DJ becourse they now that this DJ choose the right stuff to play. This takes a lot of time. And for me finding all the good recordings on vinyl is even harder. But its totaly worth it.

So next time you see a DJ perform, remember all the time he spent picking good tracks just for you. And a DJ CANT use Spotefiy!!!! A DJ needs to know the beat the key and he needs to know how the tune goes if he/shes going to do a good job!

Last friday and saturday i was DJing at Uddevalla and Stenungsund both at Harrys. The DJ-booth in these places are not made for vinyl, so i went all digital. Its working but its not as nice as playing vinyl. I use a laptop and a four channel mixer, two X1 midi controlers and the DJsoftware Traktor Scratch Pro.

The 24 of fabuary i will be using only vinyl, no coputers at all in Borås at Grand!

New pickup system.

Lately i have found that the deeper bass in newer productions make the pickup vibrate on a way i dont have seen before. This was not a problem before, but today it makes it impossible to give the audience the strong sound with lots of bass. So i decided to try these new pickups out. I will give you feedback i promise! The old Shure pickups i been using is of a model that has been around for over 25 years... Its maybe time to start using something else...

The NS7 and NS6 are in my humble opinion stunning pieces of DJ hardware, but something has been missing from them. Granted, they've run absolutely perfectly with their chosen software i.e. Serato's ITCH, but Traktor love for these controllers has been absent, or at least average at best. But that's about to change - Numark and Native instruments are about to set the record straight. Behold the 4Trak - it's the NS6 dedicated to Traktor.

We got the official world exclusive on this one. Some bright spark in the retail chain thought it would be cool to cobble together pages of the manual (not a patent application) and leak them, but Numark gave us the proper first look. So let's get the official stuff out of the way first:

Yay - the other 50% of the DJ market finally gets some Numark top controller love. Be aware that this isn't a kneejerk product - it's been planned for 18 months, with many changes along the way, but mainly due to NI's constant development of Traktor. And to be clear - this is an official collaboration between NI and Numark rather than just an mapped NS6 with a new paint job.

So I know you're thinking exactly the same as I am - given that NI make their own hardware, why on earth should they work with Numark to make a full on (not in any way LE) Traktor controller? Well NI are a great software company, whereas Numark are a pure hardware company with a heap of purchasing power. Thus Native seem quite happy to allow Numark to make what is probably the premium Traktor controller on the market along with a license for a 4Trak specific Traktor Pro. And with the numbers that Numark shift, NI would be mad not want a slice of that hardware pie, as I don't think they could make a controller of this quality and keep it to an affordable price. Yes, they could make it, and make an amazing job of it, but I doubt you or I would be able to afford it. Given that Numark already have the tooling in place, it's far more cost effective for them to make this than it ever could be for NI.

It looks like the NS6 in a silver case, and to all intents and purposes it is. But to get the very best performance from their respective hardware, specifically the jog wheels, NI and Serato do things a little differently. So firmware comes into play rather than just software alone. If you'll recall, when I reviewed the NS6, I thought that the Traktor performance was OK, but it was a real compromise compared to ITCH. And the 4Trak would explain why that is, and with hindsight would also shed light as to why Numark didn't exactly push Traktor performance on the NS6.

But one area where Traktor has a clear and acknowledged advantage is with effects. ITCH and SSL have great effects - perfectly serviceable for the majority of DJ situations, but Traktor is the daddy of DJ effects. Thus the 4Trak comes with a new effects controller called the FX Kommand Console. Yes, comes with rather than optional extra and fits with a rather neat clamp system to the main body of the 4trak. It controls FX1 and 2 with knobs for 3 parameters, and rather neatly adds filter controls in line with the 4 channels. And to save your USB ports, the FX part plugs into the 4Trak rather than taking up a valuable port on your computer.  I rather like the placement of the FX Kommand Console. Sometimes, controller users have a bit of a boring head down thing going on, but with this placement, it should add a little more movement to a DJ's live performance.

I have to comment on looks. The established Black/Red ID of the NS6 and 7 is cool and slick in a Knight Ridery way. The 4Trak... hmmm... will take some getting used to. The FX controller gives it a really 70s retro synth look. I will reserve judgement until I've seen it in the flesh. To match Traktor, I probably would have gone for Orange rather than Yellow, but the images look to be a victim of Photoshop rather that portraying real life.

So now there are 2 near identical controllers running different software. I'm sure that if Numark could, they'd just make one unit to run both Traktor and ITCH. But to me this signifies the predicted polarisation of the platforms to a point where hardware cannot be made compatible and get equal performance. Hmmm… I guess the world of a common MIDI protocol where you can choose your hardware and software independently are nothing more than a pipe dream, unless you adopt the middle ground of VDJ/MixVibes which seems to do a pretty good job of making most things works. So don't be having any mad ideas of buying a 4Trak and simply downloading ITCH - it doesn't work.

The Numark 4Trak comes in with a street price of $1099. No euro or sterling prices just yet. Yes it's a bit more than the NS6, but it does have a whole separate lump of effects controller with it. Expect to see it Q2 - that's March to June.

I think Numark have a winner here. Superficially speaking, I'm not a fan of the looks, the but NS6 workflow is sound, and only enhanced by the additional FX controller. It'll be interesting to see how well the ITCH specific controls adapt to the new Traktor sample based way of working of course. But Traktor fans now have choice - either NI's compact and lightweight S4, or a heavier more spaced out beast for those who give their gear a beating, or just simply don't want an all plastic controller. This will certainly test NI's user loyalty to the hardware brand.

One last observation - I'm seeing an increasing number of internet comments about how people have invested in 4 channel controllers just to sell them to get a 2 channel equivalent. I asked the logical question about a 2Trak, the response to which was that there are no current plans but if the people speak loud enough, then it might happen. And that means more than 3 of you with the ability to write long posts.

Let's Mix has gone offline

It is with great regret that we must declare that the Letmix.com mix streaming site has gone offline (per January 1st 2012). This decision follows the reassessing of our licensing restrictions, alongside a critical evaluation of the business case for our service. Our intention to expand on our operations had fundamentally outgrown the Let's Mix site.

The closing of Let's Mix is not the result of complaints from copyright holders. It is a decision based on the equation of cost for hosting and delivering copyrighted components, versus the ability of monetizing use of the site.

We found that as the business of music streaming evolved, so would we need to. Had we desired for Let's Mix to grow any bigger, we would also have been forced to impose strict limitations on mixes in ways neither we nor our users would have wanted to. Faced with the proposal of sacrificing user experience and scale, we were forced to reach the difficult decision of ceasing all activity at Let's Mix.

It has been a great pleasure to enjoy the hours upon hours of mixed music, and we are thankful for the many discoveries we have made listening to your mixes.

Here is a little tribiute to a turntabalist legend. Grandmaster Roc Raida!

Anthony Williams (May 17, 1972 – September 19, 2009), better known as Roc Raida or Grandmaster Roc Raida, was an American DJ, turntablist and producer. He was also a member of the legendary DJ group, The X-Ecutioners.

He joined the X-Men in the late 80s, but due to copyright reasons, they later became known as The X-Ecutioners. The group released three studio albums, 1997's X-Pressions, 2002's Built from Scratch and 2004's Revolutions. In addition to his work with the X-Ecutioners, Roc Raida released albums as a solo artist, his most famous being 2005's Rock Phenomenon, a mash-up album he released with DJ Vlad that blended rock songs with hip hop songs, which won the Mash-Up Mixtape of the Year at the Justo Mixtape Awards. He also produced songs for artists including Ill Al Skratch, Showbiz and A.G., the Jungle Brothers, Mad Skillz, Smif-n-Wessun, Jehst and Big Pun, and served as the DJ for Busta Rhymes.

He won the 1995 DMC World DJ Championship and was inducted into the DMC Hall of Fame four years later. He was the DJ for rapper MF Grimm through the mid-90s, during both of their early careers. He also appeared in the 2001 film Scratch.

He died on September 19, 2009 from cardiac arrest due to complications a few weeks earlier relating to an accident while training in Krav Maga. Anthony "Grand Master Roc Raida" Williams is survived by his wife and three daughters Asia, Nyra and Tia-Maria.

A friend af mine Pierre Jerksten has found an old video from The Swedish DJ Mixing Championship 1991. This is one of the selections to the finals. This was the first year for me. And winner of this heat was Björn Starfelt who also won the finals in Stockholm same year. He represented Sweden in The DMC World Finals 1991 and got the 5e place. I cant believe that this was 20 years ago... I was only 17 years old in this video.

He lost a lot of places in the DJ Mag Top 100 this year. He went down to 97th place. But he is still a hero to me. He is one of a few DJs who still uses the real vinyl set. This weekend I was in Stenungsund and was DJing at Harrys. On friday it was a 80-90s theme and lots of guests. And on saturday it was Harrys 18 and a big Winter Party! The place was packed and it was a great party! You can find more pics on my facebook page: www.facebook.com/djkangasoja.

Also this weekend was the first time I left my CD´s home. I always play Vinyl, but sometimes, like in Harrys in Stenungsund the DJ both is not made for vinyl-DJing. But in these cases I use my twinn traktor X1 setup.

It worked out fine... The setup is a PC with Traktor Scratch Pro 2 using four decks. Controling it with two X1 controls.

Stamper: A stamper is used to "press" the vinyl. Pressing vinyl records over and over again is hard on metal stampers. Causing them to wear out, split, become scratched, etc. For a regular weight LP, one can press approximately 1000 records per set of stampers before we start to lose sound quality. For HQ-180 records, the general rule of thumb is one set of stamper per 500 records, due to the longer cycle time and added pressure needed to make the thicker record. Therefore, if you have larger orders, more stampers are needed to complete that order with the highest quality surface integrity. Very few DJs can jump from club sets to high-profile festival performances, to Kanye West’s larger-than-life stadium shows with ease. In today’s DJ culture, A-Trak holds a truly unique place. Last night a DJ saved my life is not only a great song from Indeep. Its a great book as well. In this book you can in over 500 pages read about the history of the DJ, and almost all types of dance music. You can find this book in most online bookstores. Its a nice chritmas gift to a person who loves dance music and clubbing.

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life is a book written by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton about the history of DJing published in 1999. A compilation album of the same name was released with the book. The album contains various clips ranging from 1970s reggae to Handel's Largo, the first song to reach radio airwaves, in 1906. The book takes its name from the Indeep single "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." In 2006, The Observer named Last Night... #45 on their list of the greatest music books.
Both experienced journalists, Brewster and Broughton seek to chronicle the role of the DJ in the 20th century. Starting from Jimmy Savile, who was effectively the first DJ, Broughton and Brewster track the rise of the DJ as a figure in music. The authors champion the idea that the DJ is an "unsung hero" of popular music and is an artist himself. In examining the place of a DJ over time, Last Night... also follows the rise and fall of various musical genres and subcultures.
The companion album, which was compiled by Brewster himself, serves as an overview of dance and DJ music.

Last night it was announced that David Guetta has taken the first place in the DJ MAG TOP 100 DJ list. The last number one was Armin Van Buuren and he has had that place for the incredible 4 years now. But the new first place of the best 100 DJs in the world goes to David Guetta. This is in my mind a proof that the house music has become more approved by radiolistners and more and more radiostations play more house music. I personaly like that the slow and in my mind a bit boring RNB is now days more and more house influeced. I will be back to announce how it went for our Swedish heros like Swedish House Mafia, Eric Prydz, Avicii and the others later.... So if there is someone out there how dont know who David Guetta is.... Here he is.

David Guetta Facts:

Pierre David Guetta (born 7 November 1967), known professionally as David Guetta (French pronunciation: [daˌviːd gɛˈta]), is a French house music producer and DJ. Originally a DJ at nightclubs during the 1980s and 1990s, he co-founded Gum Productions and released his first album, Just a Little More Love, in 2002. Later, he released Guetta Blaster (2004) and Pop Life (2007). His 2009 album One Love included the hit singles "When Love Takes Over" (featuring Kelly Rowland), "Gettin' Over You" (featuring Chris Willis, Fergie & LMFAO) and "Sexy Bitch" (featuring Akon), the last becoming a top five hit in the US and all three reaching #1 in the UK, as well as another internationally known single called "Memories" featuring Kid Cudi which became a top five hit in many countries. Guetta has sold over three million albums and 15 million singles worldwide. He is currently one of the most sought-after music producers. Today in the mail there where this great 12" single. Its New Order - Blue Monday. This must be one of the most played dance single in the world. This remix was made by Quincey Jones in 1988.

Facts about New Order:
Between 1977 and 1980, Ian Curtis, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Bernard Sumner were members of the post-punk band Joy Division, often featuring heavy production input from producer Martin Hannett. Curtis committed suicide on 18 May 1980, the day before Joy Division were scheduled to depart for their first American tour, and prior to release of the band's second album, Closer. The rest of the band decided soon after Curtis's death that they would carry on. Hook told Mojo in 1994, "The first meeting we all had, which was the Sunday night [after Curtis committed suicide], we agreed that. We didn't sit there crying. We didn't cry at his funeral. It came out as anger at the start. We were absolutely devastated: not only had we lost someone we considered our friend, we'd lost the group. Our life basically."
The members of Joy Division had agreed before Curtis's death not to continue under the Joy Division name should any one member leave the band. On 29 July 1980, the still unnamed trio debuted live at Manchester's Beach Club. Rob Gretton, the band's manager for over twenty years, is credited for having found the name "New Order" in an article in The Guardian entitled "The People's New Order of Kampuchea". The band adopted this name, despite its previous use for ex-Stooge Ron Asheton's band The New Order.
As the term "New Order" was featured in Hitler's Mein Kampf as "the new order of the Third Reich" and the name Joy Division originated from the prostitution wing of a Nazi concentration camp mentioned in the 1955 novel The House of Dolls, critics attempted to cite fascist undertones. The band publicly rejected any claims that the name had anything to do with fascist or Nazi sympathies, with Sumner later saying, "We really, really thought it didn't have any connotations, and we thought that it was a neutral name, it didn't mean much....".
The band rehearsed with each member taking turns on vocals. Sumner ultimately took the role, as the guitar was an easier instrument to play while singing. Wanting to complete the line-up with someone they knew well and whose musical skill and style was compatible with their own, New Order invited Morris's girlfriend, Gillian Gilbert from Macclesfield, to join the band during the early part of October 1980, as keyboardist and guitarist. She had already played with Joy Division a number of times, filling in for both Curtis and Sumner playing guitar. Gilbert's membership was suggested by Gretton. Gilbert's first live performance with New Order occurred at The Squat in Manchester on 25 October 1980.
The initial release as New Order was the single "Ceremony", backed with "In a Lonely Place". These two songs were written in the weeks before Curtis took his own life. With the release of Movement in November 1981, New Order initially started on a similar route as their previous incarnation, performing dark, melodic songs, albeit with an increased use of synthesisers. The band viewed the period as a low point, as they were still reeling from Curtis' death. Hook commented that the only positive thing to come out of the Movement sessions was that producer Martin Hannett had showed the band how to use a mixing board, which allowed them to produce records by themselves from then on.
A change in musical direction was brought about when New Order visited New York City in 1981. The band immersed themselves in the New York dance scene and were introduced to Post-Disco, Latin freestyle, and electro. Additionally, the band had taken to listening to Italian disco to cheer themselves up, while Morris taught himself drum programming. The singles that followed, "Everything's Gone Green" and "Temptation", indicated the change in direction toward dance music.
The Haçienda, Factory Records' own nightclub (largely funded by New Order) opened in May 1982 in Manchester and was even issued a Factory catalogue number: FAC51. The opening of UK's first ever superclub was marked by a nearly 23-minute instrumental piece originally entitled "Prime 5 8 6", but released 15 years later as "Video 5 8 6". Composed primarily by Sumner and Morris, "Prime 5 8 6"/"Video 5 8 6" was an early version of "5 8 6" that contained rhythm elements that would later surface on "Blue Monday" and "Ultraviolence".

From now on I dont need anyone else to help me with my big turntable/mixer case. After last weeks gigs i feelt it in my muscles that I had carried over 250 kg in stairs and in/out of the car. So i got my self three cases instead of the big heavy one i had before. They are from ProDjUser and are really nice. And I can adjust more to the DJ-both becourse I can turn the turntables into "battle mode" as well.

This weekend I was DJing at Harrys in Stenungsund. Friday was a party! A lot of people and a good feeling. Saturday the guests came quite late but the last hours where a great time. But the hole weekend I had to mix the hardest housemusic with Swedish party music becourse the age of the guests where from 18 to 60..... But thats nice.

Last Friday a went to Borås to DJ at Grand Hotel. It is a big nightclub with really great sound and lightning. It was over 1000 people there and I was spinning my vinyls. The band "No Limits" had a great show and the people partyed all night long. Thanks to the people from Borås and thanks to the personel at the hotel, you were very professional and very helpful. I took some photos (with my Iphone) thats why the quallity is not what it should be... Here they are.

Last night I was DJing in a fashion store in Kungälv. It was a VIP-party for the costumers with a Kick-boxer show a fashion show and Gretchen Of Sweden as confrancier. Food from Moodys. And Little Bird Tattoo was there and did some live-tattooing... It was i fun evening exept som technical problems with the hired PA-system. But as soon that problem was fixed we hade a great time.

This week i will be spinning my vinyl on Spot/Goopy to day, thursday and on Grand Hotel in Borås tomorrow. So last evening i packed my cases with vinyl. Carefully selcting witch records to bring. Thats one of the big differences DJing on vinyl compared to be DJ with a laptop or using CD. You cant bring all your music.... So the music you play as a Vinyl-DJ is moore thought through.

This saturday I was DJing at a birthday party. It was not a typical birthday party. It was 200 guests and the party was held in Börsen in Gorthenburg. Börsen is a fantastic and beautiful building. Michael Bindefeld had all the arrangement and as always did a fantastic job. The entertainment for the night was me as DJ, The Cotton Club, Afrodite and E-type. I had a great time and the guests were partying all night... So from me to you happy birthday Hans Wallenstam.

Kvinnor kan!

Det har under en längre tid diskuterats om könsindelningen på DJs. Jag orkar inte ge mig in i den debatten, då jag tycker att det finns både bra och dåliga DJ´s av båda kön. Dock tycker jag det är lite konstigt att kräva att en nattklubb skall ha ca 50% kvinnliga DJs? AV alla DJs i landet så är väl ca 10% av kvinnligt kön och då bör väl rimligtvis 10% av alla DJs på nattklubbarna vara kvinnor? Nu är det enligt någon statistik i Stockholm ca 35% Kvinnliga DJs. Så varför klaga? I detta fall är ju de kvinnliga DJsen nästan överrepresenterade eller?
Hur som helst.... Här kommer en duktig DJ (kvinnlig om det nu spelar någon roll) som lirar vinyl! Hon kallar sig DJ Zohra....

Den sista fredagen i varje månad så kör Grand Hotel i Borås en klubb för alla över 30+. Detta är månadens höjdpunkt för många Boråsare. Under året har klubben gästats av bland annat Noice, Christer Sanderlin och DJ Clabbe. Nu är det dags igen den 30 september med mig på scen. Jag kommer att lira vinyl hela kvällen och tillsammans med coverbandet No Limits så lovas en riktig partykväll!

Grand Hotel och dess restauranger har skapat en miljö som känns rätt för varje tillfälle. Vår ambition är att vara det självklara alternativet i Borås när det gäller mat, dryck och nöje.

Lobbyrestaurangen Bara har nästan alltid öppet och blir på så sätt en naturlig mötesplats för både hotellgäster och boråsare. Se oss gärna som ditt andra vardagsrum och känn dig alltid välkommen hit.
